Natural hydrogen reservoirs could double as underground storage, study says
A study led by Shanghai Jiao Tong University suggests geological formations with naturally trapped hydrogen, such as Albania's Bulqizë reservoir, could serve as large-scale underground storage. Modeling of 72 scenarios found capacity of 350–480 million cubic meters and daily throughput of 750,000 cubic meters with under 2% losses.
- Model puts Bulqizë reservoir capacity at 350–480 million cubic meters of hydrogen
- Daily throughput up to 750,000 cubic meters, storage losses under 2%
- Over 10 years of cycling, fault slip risk decreases as gas pressure redistributes
- Hydrogen forms via serpentinization and has been trapped for thousands of years
