JWST captures deepest spectrum of little red dot GLIMPSE-17775
A team led by Vasily Kokorev at UT Austin published in The Astrophysical Journal the deepest spectrum yet of GLIMPSE-17775, a little red dot at redshift 3.501, about 1.8 billion years after the Big Bang. The JWST data point to a rapidly accreting supermassive black hole inside a dense gas cocoon rather than a massive stellar population.
- Gravitational lens Abell S1063 magnified the light of GLIMPSE-17775
- About 30 hours of JWST time, including ~20 hours of NIRSpec spectroscopy
- Corrected for lensing, that equals roughly 80 hours of unlensed exposure
- Redshift 3.501 places the object ~1.8 billion years after the Big Bang
