Scientists find overlooked cause of age-related muscle weakness
Researchers at the University of Missouri found that aging impairs communication between nerves and muscles due to lower levels of the protein NaV1.4, contributing to sarcopenia. Partially inhibiting the protein ClC-1 with NMD Pharma's ignaseclant improved muscle response to nerve signals and strength in an animal model.
- Sarcopenia affects nearly half of adults older than 80
- Loss of NaV1.4 disrupts nerve-to-muscle signaling
- ClC-1 inhibition improved muscle strength in animal models
- Ignaseclant showed gains in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease trials
