India introduces 0.4% UPI charge on payments above 2,000 rupees from October 15, 2026

Starting October 15, 2026, India's new UPI rule allows a roughly 0.4% charge on payments above 2,000 rupees. Users may not see direct deductions, but merchants could pass costs on through higher prices or refuse UPI. In August 2026, UPI processed 24,508.96 million transactions worth about 29.82 lakh crore rupees.
