Atlantic AMOC current has been weakening for nearly 20 years
Researchers at the University of Miami found direct observational evidence that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has been weakening for nearly two decades. The decline spans the subtropics to mid-latitudes (16.5°N–42.5°N) based on four seafloor monitoring arrays. A weaker AMOC could shift rainfall, storms and sea levels.
- AMOC weakening confirmed at four arrays from 16.5°N to 42.5°N
- Seafloor instruments collected data for nearly 20 years
- A weaker AMOC may intensify storms and alter rainfall and winters
- The study was published in Science Advances on April 8
