Hubble Survey Studies Metal-Poor Stars as Analogs of the Early Universe
Astronomers at the University of Utah surveyed 29 massive, metal-poor stars in nearby dwarf galaxies using Hubble's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph as part of the TEMPOS program. The data will help build better models of the Population III stars that formed a few hundred million years after the Big Bang.
- The TEMPOS survey covered 29 massive stars with low metallicity
- It used Hubble's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph ultraviolet data
- The most metal-poor stars show sharply weaker stellar winds
- Iron absorption features were detected, requiring further study
