Semaglutide extends lifespan in mice by nearly 100 days beyond calorie restriction
A UC Berkeley study found that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, improved muscle and cognitive function in older female mice and extended median lifespan by nearly 100 days. Some benefits went beyond those of calorie restriction alone, suggesting an independent biological pathway.
- 20-month-old female mice given semaglutide for 3 months showed better muscle and memory
- Median lifespan was nearly 100 days longer than in untreated mice
- Compared with a 24% calorie-restricted diet, semaglutide produced broader effects
- Metabolic rate held steady on the drug but declined under calorie restriction
