New map reveals where humans are adding and removing fresh water
A study using GRACE and GRACE-FO satellite data from 2002 to 2025 identified 94 regions with abnormal changes in freshwater storage. Losses averaged 45% higher than previous estimates, and 40 of the 94 regions are driven mainly by human activity.
