GM starts building EVs with batteries made from recycled materials

General Motors has begun producing electric vehicles whose batteries contain materials recycled from end-of-life GM EVs. In a pilot with Cirba Solutions, 80 old batteries were processed into 12 metric tons of cathode active material using 100% recycled nickel, cobalt and manganese.

• Recycling recovers 95% of nickel, cobalt and manganese and 80% of lithium
• Pilot yielded 12 metric tons of cathode material from 80 end-of-life batteries
• Batteries now power Cadillac Lyriq, Escalade IQ, Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV
• GM and Redwood Materials will deploy about 10,000 used EV batteries for energy storage
