New concrete with zeolite and bamboo biochar is stronger and captures CO2

Engineers at Mepco Schlenk Engineering College in India developed an M35 concrete mix with 50% zeolite and 1% bamboo biochar. Compressive strength rose 7.48% to 38.49 MPa and split tensile strength improved 15%, while the material absorbs 1.2 g of CO2 per day.

• ZB5 mix: 50% zeolite replacing fine aggregate and 1% bamboo biochar replacing cement
• Compressive strength of 38.49 MPa, 7.48% higher than conventional concrete
• Split tensile strength of 4.39 MPa, a 15% improvement
• Captures 1.2 g of CO2 per day, with gas penetrating 15 mm in seven days
