Steam Beta adds experimental Pyrowave video codec for Remote Play
Valve released a new Steam Beta for all platforms with its own experimental Pyrowave video codec for Remote Play. The codec uses the GPU for encoding and decoding, supports HDR and YUV 4:4:4, needs 5–10x more bandwidth (100–500 Mbit/s) and is available on Windows, macOS and Linux with the experimental SteamRT3 client.
- Pyrowave uses 5–10x the bandwidth of other streaming codecs
- Bitrate can be set manually from 100 to 500 Mbit/s
- HDR is enabled automatically, YUV 4:4:4 is optional
- Linux requires the experimental SteamRT3 client; mobile Steam Link support is coming
