EU drafts VEEF loophole to label biofuel cars zero-emission
The European Parliament is preparing to approve the VEEF category — combustion cars running exclusively on biofuels or e-fuels — granting them a legal zero tailpipe emission score. Critics say the vehicles emit the same toxic pollutants and would require two parallel pump networks and complex anti-tampering hardware.
- VEEF would give biofuel combustion cars a legal zero-emission status
- HVO biodiesel costs about €13 per 100 km versus €7 for an EV
- Europe's biofuel supply could power only about 1 million cars
- From 2033 new VEEF models would run only on advanced waste fuels
