Ofcom outlines age verification methods for UK social media ban
Ofcom has recommended four methods for verifying the age of social media users ahead of the UK's under-16 ban, due in March 2027. The options include photo ID matching, banking-based checks, facial age estimation and digital ID services; the government will decide by year-end.
- Ban will block under-16s from Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat
- Ofcom endorsed photo ID, banking checks, facial estimation and digital ID
- Social networks, not Apple or Google, must implement the checks
- Regulator admits some children will still bypass age verification
