Mastercard and Interswitch launch Google Pay in Nigeria

Mastercard and Nigerian payments provider Interswitch have brought Google Pay to eligible Mastercard cardholders in Nigeria. Users can add supported bank cards to Google Wallet and pay contactlessly via NFC on Android phones, with Mastercard tokenisation protecting card details.

• Supported cards include FirstBank, GTBank, UBA and Zenith Bank
• Payments run through Google Wallet over NFC without a physical card
• Mastercard tokenisation replaces card data with digital credentials
• Nigeria had 5.9 million PoS terminals as of March 2025
