GitHub adds 4M cores and 160PB storage to handle AI agent surge
GitHub announced at its Universe conference that it is adding 4 million CPU cores and 160 petabytes of high-speed storage to cope with demand from AI agents. The platform logged 7.4 billion commits in September 2026, five times more than a year earlier, and its 90-day availability fell to about 84% on May 7. GitHub is separating compute and storage and moving to multi-region Azure deployment, expecting 35x more throughput.
