TOI-1355 b: an eccentric hot Jupiter around an extremely hot star
Astronomers at the University of Tokyo have found TOI-1355 b, a giant planet orbiting a star with a surface temperature of about 8,400 °C in roughly two Earth days. The secondary eclipse arrived earlier than expected for a circular orbit, revealing a highly eccentric path. The planet's changing orbit will make further transit observations impossible after about 2033.
- The planet completes one orbit in about two Earth days
- Its host star TOI-1355 is roughly 8,400 °C versus the Sun's 5,500 °C
- The eccentric orbit likely stems from gravitational encounters and tidal evolution
- Transit and eclipse observations remain possible only until around 2033
