Rocky Linux creator built Rust kernel Ginux in 11 days with AI
Gregory Kurtzer, creator of CentOS and Rocky Linux, unveiled Ginux, an independent Rust-first x86-64 kernel that implements the Linux ABI. An OpenAI Codex agent running GPT-5.6 Sol produced roughly 139,000 lines of code and over 1,000 commits in 11 days; it currently runs only in QEMU with no GPU or NVMe support.
- Ginux is not a Linux fork: own memory, scheduler, filesystems and networking in Rust
- Linux ABI compatibility lets Rocky Linux 10 boot to multi-user.target
- About 139,000 lines and 1,000+ commits from GPT-5.6 Sol in 11 days
- Runs only in QEMU for now, with no GPU, NVMe or independent security audit
