Moxnox 1.0 released: an open-source OS inspired by Windows NT
Mark Harmstone, author of the WinBtrfs driver, has released Moxnox 1.0, an experimental open-source OS that blends Windows NT-style architecture with POSIX compatibility and native Btrfs support. The hobby project, in development since 2022, spans about 130,000 lines of C++ and targets x86-64 and ARM64.
- System calls and low-level interfaces mimic Windows NT, while filesystem layout follows Unix
- Executables use the PE format (.exe/.dll), yet Unix paths and fork are supported
- Ported software includes Bash, GCC, LLVM, Git, Python, Rust, OpenSSH and Vim
- The OS is self-hosting but cannot run Windows apps and has no graphical desktop
