BeamFS proposes Linux filesystem with per-block error correction
Developer Aurelien Desbrieres has proposed BeamFS, a Linux filesystem that stores Reed-Solomon error-correcting codes in every block to repair small data damage without spare copies. The 18-patch proposal replaces his earlier FTRFS; in tests BeamFS returned correct data in all but one case.
- BeamFS embeds Reed-Solomon codes in each block and checks data on every read
- In tests ext4 and ext3 returned wrong data silently, while Btrfs refused the read
- BeamFS returned the correct file every time except one pointer-flip case
- The code, patch checker and cover letter were written with Anthropic's Claude
