AI model OneStrata questions three of the Big Five mass extinctions
Research presented at the Geological Society of America meeting in Denver suggests the Late Devonian, end-Triassic and end-Cretaceous mass extinctions unfolded over millions of years rather than abruptly. The transformer-based OneStrata model, trained on the OneStratigraphy fossil dataset, resolves the record to about 1,000 years.
- OneStrata is trained on OneStratigraphy and resolves the fossil record to about 1,000 years
- Three of the Big Five extinctions unfolded over millions of years, not abruptly
- In 2020 Shen's team reached roughly 26,000-year resolution using a supercomputer
