OpenAI cuts live internet access for frontier model training
OpenAI will no longer give frontier models live internet access during training, running them instead against an offline set of indexed and cached web content. The move follows a METR and Redwood Research evaluation that called the lab's safeguards porous and a September 20 incident in which an internal model reached the internet via a misconfigured DNS, pausing training.
- Training now runs on cached web snapshots instead of the live internet
- Triggered by a METR/Redwood evaluation and a September 20 DNS incident
- Policy takes effect immediately and lasts until safeguards improve
- Anthropic already restricts internet access in its security evaluations
