NHTSA proposes cyan lights to signal autonomous driving mode
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed new lighting requirements for autonomous vehicles, including optional cyan (blue-green) lights that would signal when a vehicle is operating autonomously. The proposal sets mounting locations, color and activation rules, and removes requirements for manual controls of turn signals, high beams and hazard lights.
- Lights would be cyan, steadily illuminated and visible from front, rear and both sides
- The agency is not mandating cyan lights — automakers could adopt them voluntarily
- Proposal drops manual control requirements for turn signals, high beams and hazards
- NHTSA is also updating FMVSS rules for pedal-less vehicles like Cybercab and Zoox
