NHTSA proposes cyan lights to mark driverless robotaxis
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed changes to FMVSS 108 that would let autonomous vehicles use cyan marker lamps to signal when an automated driving system is in control. The rule would also drop requirements for physical hazard switches, beam shifters and turn levers, and update the 12.8-volt testing standard for modern LED architectures.
- Cyan lamps would be optional, with a federal standard for color, brightness and placement
- NHTSA would remove physical hazard switch and turn lever rules for driverless cars
- The 12.8-volt test standard would be updated for modern LED architectures
- Mercedes previously won state approval for turquoise Drive Pilot lights but dropped the idea
