Spinosaurus spent most of its life underwater, study finds
Yale researchers used machine learning on more than 11,000 skeletal measurements to conclude that Spinosaurus spent the vast majority of its time submerged. Mesosaurs, by contrast, regularly moved between water and land, much like modern alligators.
- Study analyzed over 11,000 measurements, photos and CT scans of fossils
- Spinosaurus lived 113–94 million years ago and was highly aquatic
- Mesosaurs 290–274 million years ago split time between water and land
- Method combines machine learning with a statistical approach used by WWII navies
