Blood antibody changes appear 10 years before IBD diagnosis
Scientists found measurable immune changes in blood up to 10 years before inflammatory bowel disease is diagnosed. On 2,000 serum samples, machine learning distinguished future Crohn's disease from healthy controls with an AUC of 0.90 and ulcerative colitis with 0.84.
- 2,000 serum samples from 500 people, including 400 who later developed IBD
- 123,980 unique antibodies detected against about 357,000 antigens
- Model AUC: 0.90 for Crohn's disease and 0.84 for ulcerative colitis
- Complicated Crohn's disease predicted 10 years ahead with AUC of 0.85
