Scientists find tectonic activity beneath Mars' Valles Marineris
Researchers at Imperial College London and Columbia University linked the 2021 marsquake S0976a to slip along a fault 20–40 km beneath Valles Marineris. InSight data suggests faults formed billions of years ago remain active on Mars.
- Marsquake S0976a was recorded on August 25, 2021, beneath western Valles Marineris
- The source was a strike-slip fault 20–40 km below the surface
- Valles Marineris spans 3,900 km long, up to 600 km wide and over 9 km deep
- MRO images showed no impact crater or landslide at the epicenter
