DPUs move from hyperscalers into enterprise data centers
Data processing units, long used by hyperscalers to offload bare-metal CPUs, are starting to make sense for on-premises enterprise workloads. Nvidia's BlueField-4 packs a 64-core Grace CPU and 800 Gb/s throughput, double the previous generation's 400 Gb/s.
- DPUs offload host CPUs by handling network and storage virtualization
- BlueField-4: 64-core Grace CPU and 800 Gb/s vs 400 Gb/s before
- Network virtualization can consume 20–25% of host cores
- The tech originated at hyperscalers and is now reaching enterprises
