1,000-year-old Scottish castle may be demolished for 600MW hyperscale data center
Residents of Auchtertool in Fife fear the ruins of 1,000-year-old Hallyards Castle will be destroyed to make way for the 600MW Cato data center. Historic Environment Scotland declined to designate the castle as a protected monument because the planning process is already underway. ILI Group says the site will be excavated and the stonework reused on-site.
- The 25-hectare Cato project involves around £5bn ($6.71bn) in investment
- Plans show up to seven buildings and an on-site substation
- ILI's Scottish projects would total 1.5GW at full build-out
- The Scottish Parliament voted for a temporary moratorium on new data centers
