Claude uncovers how NIST elliptic curve seeds were generated 25 years ago
Anthropic researchers, using Claude, found that the seed values of five NIST prime-field curves (P-192, P-224, P-256, P-384, P-521) were produced by the lrand48 generator seeded with Unix timestamps. The finding does not indicate the curves are compromised; it reconstructs a parameter-generation process unexplained for about 25 years.
- Seeds of five NIST curves reproduced via lrand48
- Same pattern found in five ANSI X9.62 curve seeds
- Claude applied LLL lattice techniques to recover generator state
- No compromise of the curves is claimed
