NIST's two-laser optical chip generates precise signals for compact atomic clocks
Researchers at NIST and JQI demonstrated a chip-based optical frequency comb that feeds two lasers into a single microresonator, eliminating bulky stabilization hardware. The approach could shrink optical atomic clocks for GPS-free navigation in drones and submarines.
- Two lasers in one microresonator produce a stable comb without extra stabilization
- Chips carried as many as 300 ring resonators
- Demonstration covers the comb component, not a complete portable clock
- Potential uses: GPS-free navigation, mineral and oil exploration
