KAIST develops wearable patch for hands-free eyedrops in zero gravity
Researchers at KAIST and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital created the SIMP microfluidic patch that delivers eyedrops without hands. Pressing a water-soaked fabric chamber triggers a vitamin C and baking soda reaction that produces CO₂, pushing the medication into the eye's corner. Volunteer tests matched conventional drops, though it has not yet been tested in actual zero gravity.
- Patch adheres beside the eye with medical adhesive
- Three chambers linked by microfluidic channels
- CO₂ from vitamin C and baking soda pushes the drop
- Human tests matched conventional eyedrop delivery
