Singapore researchers weave a machine-washable GUI into fabric
Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed electronic fibers that can be woven into garments to create an interactive graphical interface. The fabric survives 50 gentle machine washes and 1,000 bending cycles, and a sweater sleeve was fitted with a microphone, speaker, and light and temperature sensors.
- Millimeter-thick fibers are made by laser-stripping copper wires and attaching LED chips
- The fabric survives 50 gentle washes and 1,000 bending cycles without losing function
- A sweater sleeve was fitted with a microphone, speaker, and temperature and light sensors
- The prototype still relies on external microcontrollers and battery packs
