Blue Energy to build 2.5 GW hybrid nuclear plant in Texas from 1,500-ton blocks
US startup Blue Energy has won NRC approval for a gas-to-nuclear strategy and will build a 2.5 GW hybrid plant in Victoria, Texas. Prefabricated 1,500-ton "Blue Blocks" will be assembled at shipyards and installed on site in about a year. Two gas turbines are due to deliver 1 GW in 2030, with small modular reactors adding 1.5 GW by 2032.
- Plant capacity is 2.5 GW: 1 GW from gas turbines and 1.5 GW from small modular reactors
- 1,500-ton Blue Blocks are built at shipyards and assembled on site in about a year
- First gas turbines expected in 2030, full capacity by 2032
- Company targets construction costs as low as $5,000 per kilowatt
