Panel urges NASA to retrieve Apollo 15 hardware and waste from the Moon
A National Academies committee recommended that NASA send astronauts to the Apollo 15 landing site near Mons Hadley to collect equipment and biological waste left there in 1971. It also selected three other non-polar sites: Bhabha Crater, Orientale Basin and Aristarchus Plateau.
- The committee picked four non-polar sites for short Artemis sortie missions
- Two-person crews would make up to four moonwalks within 2 km of the lander
- Bhabha Crater on the far side ranks first for radio astronomy
- Studying the old waste and hardware would show how lunar conditions affect materials
