Berget AI releases open method to calculate CO2 emissions of AI requests
Swedish Berget AI, with SEI, WattTime and Klimatkollen, developed an open method to estimate the carbon footprint of AI requests. A typical Kimi K3 query emits about 0.4 g of CO2 in Sweden, 1.6 g in Ireland, 2.5 g in Germany and 3.2 g in Texas on identical hardware.
- Kimi K3 query: 0.4 g CO2 in Sweden vs 3.2 g in Texas
- Difference comes from the regional energy mix, not hardware
- The method is published as open source
- A web calculator compares models and regions
