Divya hand-cranked washing machine needs no electricity, holds 7 kg

Former Dyson engineer Navjot Sawhney created the Divya, a hand-cranked washing machine for regions without reliable electricity. It holds up to 7 kg of laundry, uses 30 L of water, can be disassembled with two tools and cuts washing time by 75%. The Washing Machine Project has reached 105,000 people and aims for a million users by 2030.

• Capacity up to 7 kg of laundry, 30 L of water per cycle
• Cuts washing time by 75% and water use by 50% versus hand washing
• Disassembles with two tools and lasts 5–10 years
• Target of 1 million users by 2030 via UNHCR, Oxfam and Plan International
