Meta unveils Petal, first petabit-class transatlantic subsea cable
Meta has announced Petal, a transatlantic subsea cable delivering 1 Pbps (1,000 Tbps) between the US and France, set to go live in 2029. It uses two light-guiding cores in a single standard fiber strand, doubling capacity without increasing cable size or power needs.
- Capacity of 1 Pbps (1,000 Tbps) across transatlantic distances
- Two cores per fiber give the equivalent of 48 pairs in a 24-pair system
- Stays within existing 18 kV power limits, avoiding costly requalification
- Partners: NEC for turnkey supply, Sumitomo Electric for fiber, Orange for the French landing
