Two hidden magma reservoirs found beneath Masaya volcano
Penn State researchers used six years of Sentinel-1 satellite data to find two previously unrecognized magma sources beneath Nicaragua's Masaya volcano. The caldera first subsided and then began to rise, while the ground around Santiago crater kept sinking, suggesting a separate shallower reservoir. About 2 million people live within 13 miles of the volcano.
- Sentinel-1 observed the volcano roughly every 12 days from 2018 to 2024
- The caldera subsided and then rose, hinting at new magma inflow
- Ground around Santiago crater sank throughout the six-year study
- About 2 million people live within 13 miles of Masaya
