DIII-D and Kyoto Fusioneering to test divertor for negative triangularity plasma
The DIII-D National Fusion Facility in California is teaming up with Japan's Kyoto Fusioneering to build and install a purpose-built divertor for negative triangularity plasma in its tokamak. Trials will measure heat loads and mechanical strain during extended operation, with results shared across the international DIII-D user network.
- Reverse-D plasma dampens heat bursts and radiates excess energy before it hits walls
- Kyoto Fusioneering will make heat-resistant tiles for the divertor 'chimney'
- DIII-D, Kyoto Fusioneering and Columbia University will run the trials
- Findings will feed models for future pilot fusion plants
