Scientists classify 2,000 Martian soil types for future crops
Researchers at the University of Sydney built the PPACS system, sorting Martian soils into 10 realms, 100 assemblages and 2,000 forms and mapping 92% of the planet. The Nohibareth class scored 0.93 out of 1 for plant suitability but covers only 0.14% of Mars.
- PPACS splits Martian soils into 10 realms, 100 assemblages and 2,000 forms
- The map covers 92% of the surface, with properties estimated at 800 million points
- Nohibareth class: pH 6.8, 72% clay, water capacity of 202 mm per meter
- Water-holding capacity was the limiting factor in 73% of soil forms
