Platinum-nickel-ruthenium catalyst halves precious metal use in green hydrogen
Researchers at INL in Braga produced 1.5 nm platinum-nickel-ruthenium alloy particles on defect-rich graphene for PEM water electrolysis. The catalyst holds 20.5% precious metals by weight versus 40% platinum in a commercial benchmark, yet outperforms it and runs stably for over 300 hours at 60 °C.
- Precious metal content is 20.5% by weight versus 40% platinum in the benchmark
- Current density of 1.0 A/cm² at 1.6 V in a single-cell device
- Stable for over 300 hours at 60 °C while the benchmark decayed
- Continuous-flow synthesis offers a path to larger-scale production
