Anubis: anime mascot and proof-of-work shield Linux sites from scrapers

Anubis, an open-source tool by developer Xe Iaso, gives visitors a simple math challenge to filter out web scrapers and AI crawlers. The check takes seconds for a person but becomes too costly for millions of bots. It is used by FOSS projects and Duke University's DukeSpace archive.

• Anubis was built by Xe Iaso to stop Amazon crawlers that ignored robots.txt
• The proof-of-work check takes seconds for a PC but makes mass scraping expensive
• Artist Celphase designed the anime detective mascot in three poses
• Duke University swapped the mascot for its own for the DukeSpace archive
