Trase Earth Ties Indonesian Peat Emissions to Specific Palm Oil Buyers
The Trase Earth platform has for the first time traced CO2 emissions from Indonesia's drained peatlands back to specific palm oil buyers, using shipping records, tax filings and satellite imagery. In 2024 peat subsidence produced nearly 148 million tonnes CO2e — about 85% of the sector's footprint — versus just 29 million tonnes from land clearance.
- Indonesia's palm oil emissions averaged 215 million tonnes CO2e per year in 2015–2024
- In 2024 peat subsidence emitted about 148 million tonnes CO2e; land clearance only 29 million tonnes
- Peat plantations generated 2.163 billion tonnes CO2e cumulatively over 2015–2024
- Drainage canals across Indonesian peatlands span roughly 285,000 km
