ESA's Hera Mission to Rendezvous with Didymos-Dimorphos in November
ESA's Hera spacecraft will reach the binary asteroid pair Didymos-Dimorphos in November 2026 to study the aftermath of NASA's DART impact in 2022. Traveling at 12 km/s, it carries two CubeSats, Juventas and Milani, to analyze dust and internal structure.
- Hera launched on a Falcon 9 on October 7, 2024, and took just over two years to reach its target
- Didymos is 780 m across and rotates every 2.2 hours; Dimorphos is 151 m
- DART's impact shortened Dimorphos' orbit by about 32 minutes
- CubeSats Juventas and Milani will separate from Hera after rendezvous
