XRP Ledger Patches Bug That Could Have Minted Billions in Crypto
The XRP Ledger fixed an integer overflow in its payment engine that could have let one transaction mint XRP beyond the network's fixed supply. The bug dates back to 2015; researcher Cayden Liao reported it on September 22, and the xrpld 3.4.1 patch shipped September 25 without a validator vote.
- A 64-bit overflow let one payment mint XRP beyond the 100 billion supply cap
- Exploiting it needed a few hundred accounts, one transaction and a few hundred dollars in XRP
- The xrpld 3.4.1 fix shipped without a validator vote for the first time in 10 years
- No evidence the bug was exploited on any public network
