Scientists create seed-sized injectable implant to stimulate nerves
Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi developed a seed-sized device that is injected through a standard needle and wirelessly stimulates nerves to treat chronic pain and movement disorders. Power is delivered from outside the body, and placement is guided by ultrasound and CT. The findings were published in Science Advances; human trials have not yet been conducted.
- Device is injected via a standard needle without surgery, batteries or wires
- Wireless power allows real-time adjustment of stimulation
- Implant position can be checked with ultrasound and CT scans
- Results published in Science Advances; human testing not yet done
