Google publishes Lancet study of AMIE diagnostic AI in primary care
Google and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center published in The Lancet a prospective study of Google's AMIE conversational diagnostic AI: 98 patients consulted the chatbot before urgent care visits, and no conversation required a safety stop. AMIE's differential diagnosis included the final diagnosis in 90% of cases (top-three in 75%), while management plans matched physicians on appropriateness and safety.
- 98 of 100 patients completed AMIE sessions; none were halted under safety criteria
- Final diagnosis appeared in AMIE's top seven in 90% of cases, top three in 75%, and first in 56%
- AMIE and physician differential diagnoses rated similar (p = 0.6); doctors scored higher on practicality and cost
- Patient attitudes toward AI improved significantly after using AMIE (p < 0.001)
