General Fusion hits 1 keV fusion milestone without lasers or superconducting magnets
Canada's General Fusion heated plasma in its LM26 prototype to 12 million °C (1.1 keV), a threshold previously reached only by laser and magnetic fusion machines. The company uses mechanical Magnetized Target Fusion compression; next target is 10 keV, with a pilot plant expected around 2035.
- LM26 plasma reached 1.1 keV (12 million °C) just before peak compression
- First machine to hit 1 keV using low-speed mechanical compression
- Temperature measured via Thomson scattering with UKAEA's polychromator
- Next goal is 10 keV, with a grid pilot plant around 2035
