Tesla unveils rare earth-free motor for Cyber Cab, 18% smaller
Tesla has introduced an electric motor for its Cyber Cab that uses no rare earth materials, making it 18% smaller and 25% lighter than comparable units. Ferrite magnets replace neodymium, while a hybrid permanent-magnet and reluctance-torque design keeps performance, with speeds 13% higher than the Model 3's motor.
- Motor is 18% smaller and 25% lighter than rare earth-based equivalents
- Ferrite magnets replace neodymium, over 90% of which comes from China
- Hybrid design combines permanent magnet torque with reluctance torque
- Operating speed is 13% higher than the Model 3 motor
