Membrane-free electrolysis hits 98% efficiency, yields hydrogen and epoxide
Researchers at the Technion developed an electrochemical process that produces a valuable epoxide instead of oxygen during water electrolysis. The system reports 98% efficiency for both hydrogen generation and epoxide synthesis and operates without a membrane; a U.S. patent application has been filed.
- 98% efficiency for both hydrogen and epoxide production, about 2% charge loss
- Process runs without a membrane separating the electrodes
- Current density is compatible with large-scale industrial electrolysis
- U.S. patent application filed; study published in Nature Communications
